CARRIE UNDERWOOD’S “CARNIVAL RIDE TOUR” CONTINUES WITH 51-CITY FALL RUN STARTING SEPTEMBER 23

Underwood has received strong critical acclaim for her live performances on
the “Carnival Ride Tour.” The Kansas City Star claimed her performance
“requires some Herculean vocals, and she absolutely smoked it.” The
Pittsburgh Post Gazette said, “Underwood brought pure star power and those
golden pipes” to their arena earlier this summer, and the Grand Rapids Press
stated “Underwood is truly remarkable, quite possible the most gifted
vocalist working in popular music. Beyond her immense vocal talent, the
singersongwriter exhibits a poise and confidence that belies her young
age.”

Underwood was recently nominated for two 2008 CMA awards, Female Vocalist of
The Year, a title she currently holds for 2006 & 2007, and Album of The Year
for CARNIVAL RIDE. In May, she was inducted as the newest member of the
Grand Ole Opry and named Top Female Vocalist at the 2008 Academy of Country
Music Awards for the second consecutive time. Her current album CARNIVAL
RIDE, which contains the current smash “Just A Dream” as well as the #1
co-written smash hits “So Small,” “All-American Girl” and “Last Name.” Since
her debut in 2005, Underwood¹s two albums have sold nearly 10 million copies
and she is the all-time U.S. top-selling American Idol contestant.

EXCLUSIVE BEHIND-THE-SCENES LOOK AT CARRIE’S “JUST A DREAM” MUSIC VIDEO JUST ADDED!!

Be sure to check out the exclusive look at the making of Carrie’s JAD video on the Home Page!

Happy viewing!

Day of Kindness

I hope today will serve as a palate cleanser for our perspectives that sometimes lead us to be too quick to judge and criticize others. As Billy Bob says, “I think people need to uncross their arms.”

Hopefully, some of us will recognize the negative thought processes that we too easily slip into. Perhaps you’ll consider taking a vacation day from the snarky Web sites that thrive on putting down others.

Many well-known Music Row leaders and personalities have embraced today’s philosophy and will do their best to speak only kind words of others.

Instead of bashing his political opponents today, nationally syndicated talk show host Phil Valentine will discuss what is right with America. Conservative talk show host Steve Gill is going to keep it nice today; Liberadio’s Mary Mancini and Freddie O’Connell don’t have another show until Monday, so they’re going to continue the kindness on their show next week.

Popular WSIX DJ Gerry House is participating, and he’ll be just as funny as ever. Wilson County’s WANT-FM and WCOR-AM are embracing this day as well.

Kindness is clearly non-partisan, because the Tennessee Democratic and Republican Parties have both signed on, as have the presidential campaigns of John McCain and Barack Obama.

Celebrities who are supporting the effort include Martina McBride, Carrie Underwood, Gretchen Wilson, Jessica Simpson, Alan and Denise Jackson, CeCe Winans, Vince Gill, Kellie Pickler, Sara Evans, Keith Anderson, James Otto, Chris Young, Jamey Johnson, Chuck Wicks, Kristy Lee Cook and Crystal Shawanda.

Clearly, today The Tennessean has to report all of the news that’s happening, including that which is bad. But our editorial department has embraced this topic on page A-12, where Sen. Lamar Alexander shares how the late author Alex Haley taught him, “Find the Good and Praise it,” and civil rights pioneer James Lawson Jr. shares that the finest rule of life is to manage your own life as one of love and compassion. Billy Bob writes that the public’s criticism is ruining not only art, but life.

The Tennessean is accustomed to a variety of conversations online about our stories. “For the most part, people follow the rules. They aren’t nasty. They don’t make personal attacks. They follow our terms of service. In short, people are reasonable and sometimes even nice,” said senior editor Knight Stivender, who is our online chief. “But we do have our problems. Today if you see a nasty, unkind post, click on the ‘Report Abuse’ button beside the post.

“As we do every day, our editors will remove the comment. Today, posters who violate our terms of service will be outright banned from participating in our forums. Is that nice? In a word — yes.”

My hope is that you will not only participate in this Day of Kindness but take your involvement a step further. Please document your personal journey and share your report with me at beverly@tennessean.com in an e-mail containing your full name, age and city.

How hard was it to not say anything negative? If you thought it, were you able to refrain from saying it out loud? What did this day teach you about your way of thinking? Will you do anything differently from now on? I hope you’ll be kind enough to share your day with me so I can share it with with other Tennessean readers.
